EVERYTHINGS COMING UP ROSES !

THIRD ANNUAL ROSE SALE SOLD OUT

15 FEBRUARY 2008

0924 hours

A steady stream of patrons made their way through the rose tent Wednesday and Thursday purchasing roses for their Valentine's.

Lines of shoppers waited before the tent opened both days and unfortunately some were turned away Thursday afternoon.

The rose sale started out on a trial program three years ago and blossomed (pun) into one of the company's top annual fund-raising activities.

This year's sale started out with a cold wintry mix of weather and ended with a spectacular blue sun-filled sky.  No doubt the weather help move the most roses to date.  You might remember in 2007 the sale was blanketed with nearly 15 inches of snow.

Each sale has seen an increase in the amount of roses available, but sales figures surpassed what was expected and caused the sale to end 4:30 pm.  Volunteer Hose Co Fund-Raising Chairman, Andy Hegedus vows the shortage will never happen again.

The firefighters would again like to thank all those who supported the second successful fund-raising event this month.

Don't forget that the company still offers chances to win $5000.00 cash each month.  In March the company will offer FREE a visit from the Easter Bunny.  Children are invited to stop by the firehouse on Saturday March 15, 2008, visit times will be announced here at www.throopfire.com.

In May the fire company will host the return of  "A Night at the Races" (watch for the announcement of this years corporate sponsor!).

WING FEST, HUGE SUCCESS

CREWS ACTIVATE MUTUAL AID KITCHEN

03 FEBRUARY 2008

2049 hours

What started out as an experiment exploded to a phenomenon.

Today more than 40 firefighters of the 27 RESCUE traded their firefighting gear for aprons and deep fryers.

Preliminary reports have more than 1000 orders of chicken wings sold  with the first batch purchased by State Representative Frank Shimkus (D-Lackawanna County).

Wing sales were so brisk over the original four hour sale that a separate kitchen crew was pressed into service at the Eagle Hose Co (Dickson City) and the sale needed to be extended to a sixth hour.

The Volunteer Hose Co would like to thank the public for their HUGE support.  Special thanks to Chief Chowanec and the Dickson City Fire Department for allowing us to use their kitchen.

MORNING ICE PROMOTES CHAOS

29 JANUARY 2008

0836 hours

An unexpected ice storm created treacherous driving conditions this morning throughout Lackawanna County.

The 27 RESCUE was dispatched to a rollover on Marshwood Road.

The single vehicle resulted in one victim, self-extricated with reported non-life threatening injuries.

Immediately after the 27 RESCUE was summoned to the LVIH for another crash.  The second dispatch went unfounded.

2008 FUNDRAISING SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

VOLUNTEER HOSE CO HAS LOADS OF FUN SCHEDULED

12 JANUARY 2008

1040 hours

The Volunteer Hose Co has notified the Borough of Throop and it's activities office of their full 2008 Fund Raising Schedule.

This year's activities kick-off with the return of Wing Fest on Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2008 and continue with various events throughout the year.

This year will host several events familiar to our supporters in addition to some new events like a visit from the Easter Bunny, a make Throop Greener Recycling innovative and the return of the popular "Night at the Races"!

To see the full list of activities and fund-raising events planned CLICK HERE.

The Volunteer Hose Co, like many local fire companies, relies on generous donations to fund their operating budget.   It is imperative that the fire company, entering it's 80th year of volunteer fire and rescue services, holds

these events as there has been a decline in subsidies, private contributions and more stringent staffing requirements for grants awards over the past year.

The Volunteer Hose Co has been there for more than 300 requests for service in 2007 and anticipates an increased amount of requests in 2008.

Now the request goes out to the general public for your help.  We need your support to continue providing the highest level of fire rescue protection you have been accustomed to.

LVIH CRASH INJURES TWO

23 JANUARY 2008

1700 hours

Emergency crews were dispatched to the Lackawanna Valley Industrial Highway ("The Casey") east bound for a vehicle rollover during the height of rush hour.

Upon the 27 RESCUE arrival EMS crews from Dickson City and Lackawanna Ambulance were attending to several "walking wounded".

In all three vehicles appeared to be involved in the crash with a full size Ford Expedition found on its roof.

All victims from the involved vehicles were self extricated with the most serious found several feet away from their SUV.

The Ford sustained serious damage and only a minimal amount of fluids escaped.

Two of the crash victims were transported to Scranton area hospitals with what were believed to "non-life threatening" injuries.

TRAFFIC WAS SLOWED ON THE CASEY HIGHWAY AS A RESULT OF THIS ROLLOVER.

CREWS CATCH ANOTHER DC JOB

13 NOVEMBER 2007

2015 HOURS

DICKSON CITY PA

Firefighters from Dickson City and Throop were summoned to River Street in Dickson City for reported smoke from a structure.  Additional dispatch information revealed a heavy smoke condition from a single family dwelling as Police arrived.

Within minutes DC Fire Chief, Joe Chowanec, arrived and requested "SRN" companies from Olyphant and Blakely.  As additional companies were dispatched the 23 Ladder arrived and quickly initiated their attack which revealed a working fire in the basement.  The remainder of the 23 compliment went to work just as quickly.

Approximately six minutes (per incident log) found the 27 RESCUE "going to work" as the second due truck.  Firefighters from the 27 RESCUE went to the second floor for a primary search and ventilation.  The 27 RESCUE crew found fire had burned through the first floor adjacent to the staircase and a heavy smoke condition on the second floor.  After the primary search for life revealed no evidence of victims crews then vented the second floor.

Inside the structure's second floor crews were met with some "unique remodeling challenges" that modified the entire layout of the second floor bedrooms.

At press time the cause of the fire is under investigation and the PSP Fire Marshal was summoned to the scene.

The fire displaced the residents.  There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents.

Crews returned to service in little over an hour.

RESCUE ADDS MULTIPLE GASES METER

12 AUGUST 2007

THROOP PA USA

The 27 RESCUE recently added yet another device to their public safety arsenal of tools.  The latest addition is the MSA Solaris Multi-Gas Meter.  Firefighters received hands on training Sunday morning August 19, 2007 from 1130 hrs to 1300 hrs.

The instructional seminar explained the facts about Carbon Monoxide, signs and symptoms of CO poisoning, where to use the monitor for optimal results, proper PPE and the use of multiple air monitoring devices.  This program was attended by several members of the 27 RESCUE.

Also added during the training exercise was the implementation of a new reporting system for both the responding apparatus and an additional copy for the responsible party of the structure assessed.  The new reporting system allows for the storage of empirical data for future use.

Special thanks to the Lackawanna County (PA) Emergency Management Agency and the Northeast PA Emergency Response Group for donating the latest innovations in air quality monitoring.

30 SEPTEMBER 2007

THROOP PA USA

The 27 RESCUE  was host to Task Force 1's Truck Operations Program this past weekend.

Firefighters from as far away as South Carolina learned from Captain Tony Tricario (FDNY Squad 252) and Greg Barnas (Jersey City Ladder 6).

On of the main responsibilities of the Volunteer Hose Co (27 RESCUE) ,when they respond as a mutual aid company out of Throop PA, is to act as a "Truck Company".

In today's ever evolving fire ground operations, companies like 27 RESCUE learn specialized training.

This weekend's training included venting for life or fire, searching for victims, FAST truck and RIT skills.

The program instructors from Task Force 1 bring decades of "real-life" firefighter experience.  Instructor Tony Tricario currently serves as a Captain with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Squad 252 in Brooklyn,  Captain Tricario is also a decorated instructor and contributing author to Firehouse Magazine and www.firehouse.com.

Captain Greg Barnas hails from Jersey City New Jersey's busiest ladder company Ladder 6.

Please check back soon as we update the site with pictures and video of this weekend's informative program.

04 September 2007

LACKAWANNA COUNTY PA-USA

The Scranton-Times Tribune is reporting that over the next several weeks the Interstate 81 North travel will be restricted due to bridge work.

The article published earlier today goes on to mention that travel through the areas major arteries will be congested.  Delays are almost a certain and travelers are advised to allow for more travel time or chose alternate routes.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated detour plans along with the familiar PennDOT color coding system and Video Messaging (where available).

21 - 22 APRIL 2007

BLAKELY PA - USA

When the firefighters from the 27 RESCUE were invited to train with "New York City's Bravest" the response was a "no-brainer".

This past April the Blakely Fire Company (Lackawanna County Station 22) hosted a Large Area Search/FAST Truck training program.  The 16 -hour program was offered by "Task Force -1, Inc."  Task Force 1 hosts instructors from all over the United States, in addition to the training agency's founder Ron Richards of Wayne County PA-USA.

Firefighters from Blakely, Wilson Fire Co, Jefferson Township, Jessup and Browndale Fire companies converged on the former Mr. Z's supermarket in Blakely.

Prior to participating in live evolutions the students received their instruction from FDNY Lieutenant Adam Mazy and Firefighter Sean O'Brien (131 Truck).

CEREMONY CELEBRATES "FIRST DUE at PNC PARK"

15 JULY 2007

MOOSIC PA-USA

The Volunteer Hose Co would like to offer their congratulations to the Greenwood Hose Co of Moosic Pennsylvania.

Lackawanna County's 98 Station recently dedicated two new pieces of apparatus to their firefighting arsenal.

This past weekend the membership along with the community held an "Old Fashioned Picnic" complete with a parade of friends.

Moosic Borough Official's along with representatives of several local Legislators participated in offering thanks and congratulations as Father Olfield of St. Mary's Parish blessed the 2007 KME Pumper and 2007 Greenwood Ambulance (98-9).

Once the celebration, recognition speeches and blessings were completed the membership, in traditional fashion, pushed the new vehicles in to their apparatus bays located on Birney Avenue.

THE NEW 98 ENGINE

The NEW 98 Engine will be the first due Engine company to Moosic Borough.  It replaces a 1992 KME Pumper.  The company reportedly will temporarily retain the 1992 pumper as a reserve piece.
The new Moosic ambulance is also a new venture for Greenwood.  The membership entered into Emergency Medical Services in 2006 when they took over for the financially strapped Moosic Hose Co.  Several attempts to consolidate the two organizations reached an impasse earlier this year.

As of today the Greenwood Hose Company website reports that the EMS Division has already responded to 500 requests for assistance in 2007.

To learn more about this organization, a mutual aid company to the 27 RESCUE, log on to their website at www.greenwoodfiredept.com.

27 RESCUE GOING GLOBAL

 23 FEBRUARY 2007

THROOP PA -USACobra Portable GPS Navigation (GPSM4000)

As the realm of firefighting takes new leaps and bounds so to must the tools that aide firefighters.

Over the last few years the 27 RESCUE has been assigned to many local mutual aide assignments and fortunately arrived without incident.

Last November the 27 RESCUE, a member of the Lackawanna County Technical Rescue Task Force 1, participated in a terrorism drill that required responses to areas outside of our usual districts.  What if something went wrong?

Gone are the days of extended radio-traffic requesting "directions to da scene".  The always pro-active Volunteer Hose Co No 3 has approved the purchase of a cab mounted GPS terminal to alleviate unnecessary delays responding.

Plans are being finalized as several different units are being field tested and input is being compiled as to which commercially produced unit currently available will best suit the company, chauffeur and apparatus aesthetics.

Lackawanna County Communication Center has been using GPS locators in their Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulances since approximately 1998.  Although the units do not have vehicle mapping software consoles county telecommunicators are able to locate ALS units within less than 100 yards of their actual physical locations.  Since adding the location / silent dispatch consoles have reduced response times and allowed tele-communicators to alert units which may have taken a wrong turn.

The 27 RESCUE plans to have their new GPS unit mounted and in-service by 01 March 2007.

BOROUGH APPOINTS 27 RESCUE'S MENICHETTI FIRE MARSHAL

30 JANUARY 2007

The Throop Borough Council has appointed veteran firefighter Maurice Menichetti III to serve as Borough Fire Marshal for the year 2007.  Menichetti spent a large amount of his firefighting career at the 27 ENGINE where he held the title of Captain and most recently served as the Throop Hose Co No 2 Treasurer.

Earlier this year Menichetti transferred to the 27 RESCUE.  Marshal Menichetti had previously served the past two years as Assistant Fire Marshal along with Captain Ed Bocan, also of the 27 RESCUE.  It is the first time in recent memory that two firefighters from the same company have held positions as Fire Marshals.

Both firefighters bring a vast amount of experience and professionalism to the Borough's appointed Fire Marshals.  During their term the two will serve as lead fire investigators and inspectors for the borough of over 4000.

27 RESCUE is proud to have Firefighter EMT, Maurice Menichetti III and FF1 Edward Bocan Sr as part of their team and looks forward to working in conjunction with these two dedicated firefighters.

HOT CHOCOLATE!

28 JANUARY 2007

THROOP PA - USA

1335 HOURS

Fire crews from Throop and Dickson City were dispatched to Gertrude Hawk Chocolate Manufacturing Facility.  The industrial chocolate processing plant is located in the Keystone Industrial Park.

Upon arrival workers from the plant were evacuated and reported there was a smell of smoke in the vicinity of a third floor manufacturing unit.

Fire crews responded shortly after the alarm was dispatched to confirm smoke from a third floor unit.  27-3 Chief ordered the 23 LADDER to the third floor to investigate the source.  The 23 LADDER was able to find a malfunctioning processing unit as the cause of the smoke.  Crews were able to contain the smoke and assist personnel with shutting the unit down.

There were no reported injuries and damage is reported to have been contained to the processing unit and no value has been assessed to the damaged equipment.

 ORGANIZATIONS REQUEST REMOVAL FROM THROOPFIRE.com

FEBRUARY 10,2007

THROOP PA - USA

1300 HOURS

For those of you familiar with reading information regarding the Throop Hose Co No 1, Throop Hose Co No 2 and the Throop Fireman's Relief Association on this site; those days have passed.

All three of the aforementioned organizations have requested that their information be removed effective immediately and no longer intend to be affiliated with www.throopfire.com.

Citing numerous reasons including the "throopfire.com site is a waste of money" by a member from one organization each organization's wishes have been granted.

Reportedly each organization has undergone launching of their own individual websites.

ThroopFire.com will continue the tradition of informing visitors to the site; information of the Volunteer Hose Co No 3 (27 RESCUE) and information relevant to the Throop Fire Department as a whole.

The Volunteer Hose Co No 3 thanks their supporters and forges a new future in 2007.

COUNCIL CALLS MANDATORY MEETING OF FIRE COMPANIES

JANUARY 20, 2007

THROOP PA USA

In a letter issued to each of the organization's fire chief and company president the Council has mandated that those addressed (or their appointed representatives) attend the Monday February 12, 2007 Meeting of Throop Borough Council.

The one page letter issued by Borough Chief Clerk, Elaine Morrell indicated no true agenda for the meeting.  The paragraph issued by the borough read, "The meeting will be held in council chambers and is open to the public. Please be sure that your department is represented."

It was requested as far back as October 2006 that the organizations meet in consideration of a proposed fire department consolidation.  Throop Hose Co No 1 had announced to Borough Council that (as an organization) voted against consolidation.  Throop Hose Co No 2 and Volunteer Hose Co No 3 originally notified council they would discuss matters.  Since that announcement no meetings have been held.

Throop Borough Council has taken an active role in supervising emergency services in the municipality of 4,000.  In 2005 the council issued an ordinance appointing Dickson City Community Ambulance Association (DCAA) as the borough's designated Emergency Medical Services (EMS)  provider.  That move was on the heels of financial discord with the Throop Community Ambulance Association.  Throop's Ambulance had been in service for more than 30 years when they were removed from designation.  A failed Advanced Life Support Service and dwindling membership lead to the Association filing an 11th hour bankruptcy prior to a Sheriff's Sale.

In January 2006 DCAA was appointed by resolution as the Borough's Full Time EMS provider.

Since being appointed the DCCA has responded without incident to the calls for aid and fire calls.

The DCCA Along with the former Throop Ambulance and each of the three independent fire companies of the borough operate as 100% volunteer organizations.  The companies operate 24-7-365 and have done so as far back as 1894.

The past two years Throop Borough Council issued organizations a twice a year subsidy of $17, 500.00 each to help defray the cost of operation.  Organizations continue to appeal to the public for donations and continue to offer fund raising to try to complete their annual financial obligations.

In the past two months Throop Volunteer firefighter membership and interest has increased.  Volunteer Hose Co No 3 has received as many as 10 firefighter transfers and three new applications for active membership.  Hose Co No 1 & 2 are yet to comment on their enrollment.

Earlier this month council requested financial status' in writing along with their current membership rosters.  Reported each organization was in compliance.

Anyone interested in the meeting are asked to attend as mentioned the public is invited.  The meeting time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

 DC FOTS CHALLENGES CHAUFFEURS

FEBRUARY 02,2007

DICKSON CITY PA - USA

1845 HOURS

The crazy winter of 2007 continued today when Phil DID NOT see his shadow.  Historically that means spring is to arrive early. Apparently Mother Nature has other plans.

Firefighters from Dickson City and Throop were summoned tonight to the 800 blk of Carmalt St for a report of smoke in the kitchen.

What had been an unseasonably mild winter challenged anyone driving  emergency apparatus (any vehicle for that matter) as snow covered all the primary roads in both communities.  Snow was predicted for today at a dusting but at the time of the alarm at least 3 inches had blanketed the Borough.  The roads were in the process of being cleared but were, at the time, dangerously slippery.

Fortunately, the (4 wheel drive equipped) 23 Car was first to arrive and report no fire.  AC MacCallum had the incident controlled and quickly alerted responding apparatus to return to their stations.  The fire was contained to a faulty microwave.  A sign of the times since in the past many kitchen alarms were treated as a Food On The Stove (FOTS).

There were no reported injuries, however; there was an unconfirmed report of a firefighter involved in a "fender bender car crash on Emerald Drive in Throop.  Reportedly the Firefighter was on his way to the alarm when the mishap occurred.

DICKSON CITY FIRE DEPT. MAY GET REFERENDUM FOR EQUIPMENT PURCHASE

DECEMBER 6, 2006

The Scranton Times

DICKSON CITY  PA USA— Fire Chief Joe Chowanec Jr. knows Eagle Hose Company 1 could simply go to Borough Council, explain its plight and ask for a tax increase to help buy a new aerial truck.
He’d rather let the people decide.
The volunteer fire company is proposing a referendum that would ask borough voters to approve a 1-mill property tax hike that would be used exclusively to pay for new fire vehicles, starting with an aerial truck.
